These are the rules that all residents are expected to obey:

  1. Abstain from use of alcohol and drugs. Use of any mood-altering substances will result in immediate termination of residency, loss of security deposit, and current week's rent.
  2. Obtain gainful day employment within 2 weeks. Two nights per week maximum during the first 30 days, subject to approval.
  3. Obtain an NA/AA sponsor within the first 2 weeks and call him regularly.
  4. Visitors are not allowed in bedrooms. Unrelated female guests will not be allowed on grounds or in parking areas except to pick up or drop off residents.
  5. Violence or threats of violence to any person or property are not allowed and will result in immediate discharge.
  6. No gambling in The Next Step House.
  7. Curfews: 11:30pm Sunday-Thursday. 1:30am Friday and Saturday. Two unexcused violations may result in termination of residency. During the first two weeks of residency curfews are 10:00pm Monday-Thursday and 11:30pm on Friday and Saturday.
  8. Pay rent in cash or money order no later than 7:00pm on Friday, unless you have made other arrangements in advance.
  9. Unemployed residents must be out of the house by 9:00am to look for a job.
  10. No smoking in the house. Violation of this rule will result in immediate discharge.
  11. Keep living quarters clean at all times. Beds must be made, floors must be cleaned, dishes washed and put away after each use, and ashtrays must be emptied as needed.
  12. No food allowed in bedrooms.
  13. Avoid eating other residents' food. Do use anything that is not yours without permission from the owner. Taking other people's property is stealing. Be respectful to others. Violation will result in termination of residency.
  14. Knock before entering another bedroom. Do NOT enter another bedroom if no one is there.
  15. Participate in the two weekly house meetings. The first one is on Thursday night at 10:00pm which is an in-house NA/AA meeting. The second is on Sunday at 6:00pm which is the standard house meeting, followed by cleanup. There are no exceptions unless excused by staff.
  16. Late night and overnight passes are to be requested no later than 7:00pm Thursday. You are eligible for passes only if you have been a resident for at least 30 days, are employed at the time, have a sponsor, and rent is paid in full.
  17. Report all negative contracts to staff immediately, or face possible discharge from The Next Step House.
  18. Exhibit a positive and willing attitude and be open to suggestions. A consistent pattern of resistance and defiance will lead to discharge.
  19. You must be willing to submit to random drug tests. Routine drug tests cost $20. There is no charge for random drug testing.
  20. We suggest that you make 90 meetings in 90 days. Then you must make 5 meetings per week.
  21. You must complete a four-month commitment to The Next Step House.
